Japan Airlines Corp. said Thursday it will raise fuel surcharges by up to ¥6,000 for international flights in the October-December period.

JAL plans to hike fuel surcharges on the Japan-Brazil route to ¥38,000 each way, an increase of ¥6,000. The surcharges on Japan-North America, Europe, Middle East and Oceania routes will be ¥33,000, up ¥5,000.

The carrier blamed record fuel prices for the increases. According to JAL, the average kerosene price for May-July was $163.54 per barrel in Singapore.

The surcharge hikes follow hard on the heels of JAL's decision announced this week to raise some international airfares by as much as 10 percent in October.
