A 22-year-old woman jumped onto the tracks of the Yamanote Line in Tokyo early Friday and was hit by a train and instantly killed, East Japan Railway Co. said.

The suicide, which occurred at Ikebukuro Station at around 4:50 a.m. suspended loop line services for up to four hours and 20 minutes, JR East said.

Operations of inbound trains resumed some 30 minutes after the incident, but outbound trains were halted until around 9:10 a.m., JR East said.

As the suspension continued through the morning rush hours, some 105,000 passengers were affected, the carrier said.

Police said the woman who committed suicide is believed to have been a 22-year-old college student in Tokyo, judging from her belongings.

The temperature Friday rose to 35 by the early afternoon in Otemachi in central Tokyo, logging this summer's first "moshobi," a day of extreme heat over 35.

Despite its astonishing punctuality, Tokyo's railway web has been chronically plagued by suicides that occur on a daily basis.
