NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Wednesday that first-quarter profit rose 41 percent after it reduced handset subsidies to customers.
Net income was ¥173.5 billion in the three months that ended on June 30, up from ¥122.8 billion a year earlier. Sales slipped 1.1 percent to ¥1.17 trillion.
DoCoMo halved monthly fees in November in exchange for higher-priced phones and offered free calls among family members to fend off Softbank Corp. and KDDI Corp.
