NEC Corp., Japan's largest mobile phone maker, will acquire closely held NetCracker Technology Corp. to gain software for telecommunications equipment.
The purchase would add ¥200 billion in sales to its computer and telecommunications network business over the next five years, Tokyo-based NEC said in a statement Friday.
The division, NEC's most profitable, generated ¥2.87 trillion in sales in the year that ended on March 31.
NEC didn't provide a value for the transaction. The company had cash and deposits of ¥247.4 billion at the end of March, according to its earnings statement.
NetCracker, based in Waltham, Mass., employs about 1,000 people. Its customers include France Telecom SA and Australia's Telstra Corp., according to the statement.
