A man was arrested Thursday for allegedly cutting a policeman with a knife taken from his bag during questioning in Akihabara, where a motor vehicle and knife rampage left seven people dead and 10 wounded nearly two weeks ago, a police spokesman said.

Police found the knife in the man's bag after stopping him for questioning in Japan's popular electronics and video game mecca, the spokesman said.

After police seized the knife, the man, in his 20s, snatched it back and attempted to flee. But the officers detained him and the man managed to slash an officer's hand, the official said.

The official declined to say why the man was stopped for questioning, saying only that the patrolman had "a hunch." The officer was slightly wounded.

In the wake of Tokyo's worst murder rampage in recent memory, police have beefed up security in crowded areas, including train stations and shopping districts, to respond to any copycat crimes.
