The ruling bloc-led government Monday postponed proposing to the Democratic Party of Japan a candidate for the Bank of Japan's next chief, a DPJ source said.

With the current BOJ leadership under Gov. Toshihiko Fukui set to leave office Wednesday, the government initially planned to pitch a new governor candidate Monday to the Diet after the opposition-led Upper House rejected its original nomination of BOJ Deputy Gov. Toshiro Muto for the post last week.

Earlier in the day, the DPJ rejected an informal proposal by the ruling bloc to keep Fukui in office until a successor is chosen, lawmakers said.
