An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.0 jolted Shimane and neighboring prefectures in western Japan early Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. No tsunami warning was issued. The 3:07 a.m. quake measured 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, and 3 in other parts of the prefecture as well as Sakaiminato, Tottori Prefecture. The quake was also felt in Okayama Prefecture. The focus of the quake was about 10 km underground in eastern Shimane Prefecture, the agency said.
