A heat wave continued to bake the nation Monday as a high-pressure ridge lingered over the Pacific Ocean, sending the mercury rising to 37.5 in the village of Kawai, Iwate Prefecture, the Meteorological Agency said.

Temperatures elsewhere rose to 37.3 in the Koide area of Uonuma, Niigata Prefecture, 37.2 in the Yatsuo area of Toyama, 36.8 in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, and 36.7 in Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture.

Nine locations in Hokkaido and two locations in Iwate Prefecture also marked record high temperatures.
