South Korean Lee Yun Sok took the first step toward his dream of becoming a movie director three years ago when he started studying at a Japanese film school.

Lee, 29, was among 50 students in a large classroom at the Japan Academy of Moving Images in Kawasaki, where scripts written by the students as part of their hands-on training were reviewed in early June. The mood was tense.

The review, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., was conducted by four veteran directors who had gone through every script before announcing the result of their discussions. Students were asked to pick four scripts to film.
