Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co., Japan's three largest carmakers, said Friday that production halts at Japanese plants caused by earthquake damage at a parts supplier won't disrupt exports.
Most Japanese automakers canceled some domestic vehicle-assembly shifts after piston-ring maker Riken Corp. closed 11 parts factories in the wake of Monday's strong temblor in Niigata Prefecture. Riken will restart production on a limited basis Monday.
Japan's vulnerability to earthquakes, typhoons and flooding has trained manufacturers to respond to crises. The three carmakers have sent more than 600 workers, including engineers, technicians and procurement experts, to help Riken restore production.
