YOKOHAMA — Nissan Motor Co. President Carlos Ghosn took fire for the company's disappointing 2006 earnings Wednesday as shareholders criticized his lack of a long-term vision, especially in environmental technologies.

Ghosn told shareholders at the annual meeting not to be deceived by negative media reports and assured them efforts would be made in 2007 to boost its performance and stock price, which is down about 12 percent from its year-to-date high in January.

In late April, Nissan reported a double-digit drop in profits for 2006 — its first full-year decline and the first time it has missed a profit goal and business plan targets since Ghosn took charge in 1999.
