NEC Corp. became profitable again in the fiscal year through March, the electronics company said Monday, and projected earnings would triple this fiscal year on an expected recovery in its battery and cell phone operations.
Annual net profit totaled 9.2 billion yen, reversing the 10 billion yen loss the previous year.
Sales at the manufacturer of mobile phone equipment, computers and servers dipped 6 percent to 4.65 trillion yen from 4.9 trillion yen.
NEC said losses at its mobile and electronics devices businesses had shrunk, but sales had declined in cell phone equipment and batteries.
NEC, which did not break down quarterly numbers, has been struggling because of slumping cell phone and computer sales combined with costs to restructure its computer chip operations.
