Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Japan will give $2.4 million to help flood victims in Bolivia, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Abe told Bolivian President Evo Morales during a summit Tuesday in Tokyo that Japan will give $200,000 in emergency grant aid and $2.2 million in collateral funds to help survivors in Bolivia's flood-ravaged eastern lowlands, the ministry said in a statement.

Japan plans to follow up with 800 million yen in nonproject grant aid for poverty reduction programs in the South American nation, the statement said.

The planned aid follows initial emergency assistance worth $100,000 Japan pledged to flood victims in February.

A rainy season made worse by El Nino has killed 41 people in Bolivia's eastern lowlands, driving thousands from their homes and triggering an outbreak of dengue.

Venezuela has pledged $15 million to the flood victims, while the U.S. has delivered $1.5 million in emergency aid.
