NAGANO (Kyodo) A domestic flight route Japan Airlines Corp. intended to cancel as part of its consolidation plans may be retained, a top JAL executive was quoted as saying Thursday.
The daily flight from Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, to Sapporo needs to be discussed further with local officials, Nagano Gov. Jin Murai quoted JAL's senior managing director, Kiyoshi Kishida, as saying.
The possibility arose in a meeting between Murai and Kishida at JAL's headquarters in Tokyo earlier in the day. During the meeting, Murai asked JAL to retain the Matsumoto-Sapporo route.
Nagano residents have collected more than 150,000 signatures in support of keeping the Matsumoto-Sapporo route and submitted them to JAL, which intends to ditch 10 domestic routes in fiscal 2007, which ends in March 2008.
Kishida and other JAL officials declined comment on the matter.
