The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and other consulates in Japan will be closed Tuesday for a Day of Mourning as a mark of respect for former U.S. President Gerald Ford, who passed away on Dec. 26, the embassy said.

A condolence book for the former president will be offered for the public to sign at U.S. government offices in Japan between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The offices will reopen Wednesday. Any U.S. passports and other consular documents promised for pickup Tuesday at the embassy in Tokyo will be available Wednesday.

Visa applicants with Tuesday appointments at the consulate in Osaka are requested to come between 1:30 and 3 p.m. on either Wednesday or Thursday. Those who cannot come should reschedule their appointments online.

The consulate in Naha, Okinawa, will contact visa applicants promised Tuesday directly to reschedule their appointments for a later date.
