Victor Co. of Japan on Thursday unveiled a 12-sided audio speaker that radiates a uniform sound in almost all directions.
Except for where it's connected to the base, the so-called Pulsating Sphere speaker generates sound uniformly from its entire surface, the company said.
The audio equipment maker plans to market the high-end product to audiophiles in early 2007, it said. No price has been set.
The new speaker, which is about 10 cm wide, is made up of 12 pentagonal panels of equal size. The sound is generated by diaphragms made of reinforced plastic that vibrate at the center of each of the panels.
Victor said the idea of a speaker that can radiate sound in all directions and at all frequencies has long been sought by speaker enthusiasts.
