Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki will call for enhanced public schooling and tax incentive measures for companies willing to employ senior citizens as part of his platform for the Liberal Democratic Party presidential election, sources have said.

These are among the proposals of his policy plan disclosed in July, when he declared his candidacy to run for the Sept. 20 election for LDP chief, who will become the prime minister because of the party's parliamentary strength.

Details are expected to be announced within days. On education, he will propose public elementary school curricula be beefed up to the extent that parents would see no need to send their children to private cram schools, the sources said.

He will propose that students gifted in athletics, science and culture be sent to premier institutions overseas, the sources said.

Tanigaki will also strive to ensure public school teachers do not lose touch with society's needs by having them work for a specified period of time in private-sector companies or hire teachers with experience in the corporate world, the sources said.

For extended employment, Tanigaki will propose tax incentives for companies and nonprofit organizations willing to train or hire senior citizens as part of measures to help eventually raise the mandatory retirement age, the sources said.
