The University of Tokyo has announced it will establish a finance department within the Faculty of Economics when the new academic year starts in April.
The university said students are increasingly eager to learn about financing amid a rise in merger and acquisition activities in Japan.
It will be the faculty's first new department since 1919, when it became independent from the Faculty of Law.
Mizuho Financial Group Inc. is to sponsor and organize courses for the new department for three years beginning in fiscal 2007, giving lectures on such topics as how a financial institution deals with risk management issues.
The university is considering bringing in bank officials to lecture on topics such as managing assets and developing derivative products.
