The National Police Agency plans to prohibit Japan Post vehicles from parking on the street when they pick up and deliver packages, just like parcel delivery trucks are restricted now, NPA officials said Thursday.
The NPA is thinking of instituting the ban next January due to complaints from private parcel delivery companies that have faced stricter parking rules since June.
Prefectural public safety commissions have waived parking regulations for Japan Post vehicles under the Mail Law, which provides universal mail delivery at the lowest cost.
The NPA decided to move the ban forward for Japan Post trucks because the crackdown on parking violations has forced private companies to rent parking spaces and hire extra drivers.
