Yamato Transport Co. announced plans Tuesday to lower its document delivery charges Oct. 1 to compete better with Japan Post.

Yamato will cut its highest charge for delivery of catalogs and other corporate documents from 310 yen to 240 yen.

The charge for an A-4 booklet up to 2 cm thick will be cut to 160 yen or less, compared with Japan Post's 180 yen for booklets weighing up to 150 grams.

For A-4 booklets up to 1 cm thick, the most popular size for delivery, the charge will be 80 yen.

Yamato delivered about 1.7 billion booklets in the fiscal year that ended in March, up 21 percent from the previous year. Japan Post delivered some 1.8 billion booklets.

Yamato said it hopes to raise the number of deliveries to 2.5 billion within five years.
