Thirty Japanese who survived the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 applied at their local governments Tuesday to be recognized as suffering from radiation illness.
The survivors, from Hiroshima and Kumamoto prefectures, filed at Hiroshima City Hall and the Kumamoto Prefectural Government building in the morning.
In the afternoon, hibakusha living in Tokyo and Nagasaki Prefecture filed similar applications. If successful, the applicants will become eligible for special medical benefits.
