Vice Foreign Minister Shotaro Yachi will pay a five-day trip to the United States from Tuesday to hold talks with top officials there, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

During his stay in Washington, Yachi, the ministry's top bureaucrat, will meet with U.S. State Department and White House officials to exchange opinions on their bilateral ties and issues of mutual concern, the ministry said.

Plans are afoot for Yachi to meet with a number of U.S. government officials, including U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick, a ministry official said.

Issues Yachi is expected to discuss the planned realignment of the U.S. forces in Japan, the ban on U.S. beef, the Iraq situation, Iranian nuclear crisis and U.N. reforms.
