The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly adopted a resolution Wednesday to seek the opportunity to host the 2016 Summer Olympics in the capital.
The Japanese Olympic Committee plans to pick a Japanese candidate site in late August by vote, with the city of Fukuoka a candidate site. Sapporo bowed out of the race last month due to the anticipated financial burden.
The resolution says, "For Tokyo to host of Olympic Games again would serve as an opportunity to demonstrate its strong will for world peace and to realize an environmentally friendly and mature city."
