The Cabinet approved legislative revisions Tuesday on the handling of lost items by police and private companies, including setting up an online database for the public and halving storage time.
Under the revisions, the first since 1958 for the 1899 lost goods law, unclaimed items that contain personal information, including mobile phones, computers and bank cards will be destroyed after the storage period expires.
The government hopes to have the changes, including putting the entire law into modern language, enacted during the Diet's current session and to take effect near the end of 2007.
