Tokyo University of Foreign Studies said Thursday it will open a research center in Beirut on Feb. 1 to study Middle Eastern history and culture.
The center will conduct research on Lebanon, Syria and the Palestinian territories, as well as Iran and Israel. The facility will be open to local researchers and scholars from Japan not affiliated with the university.
The research center will help establish channels for academic and cultural exchanges between Japan and the Middle East, an official of the university said.
