The National Public Safety Commission on Tuesday named Tetsuro Ito, currently head of the National Police Academy, to be the next chief of the Metropolitan Police Department.
Ito, 57, will succeed Masuo Okumura, 58.
The appointment of Ito, which was approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday, will take effect Thursday. Ito will be the 85th MPD superintendent general.
Ito, a native of Fukuoka Prefecture, joined the National Police Agency in 1972 after graduating from the University of Tokyo.
He became head of the National Police Academy last August after serving as chief of the Ishikawa and Chiba Prefectural police forces and the NPA Community Safety Bureau.
Ito is expected to lead the investigations by the Tokyo, Chiba and Kanagawa police departments into the rampant shoddy building construction linked to disgraced architect Hidetsugu Aneha.
