The disparity in vote values between single-seat districts more than doubled in 48 House of Representatives constituencies in 17 prefectures, according to estimates by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry.

The provisional calculations on all 300 single-seat districts nationwide were based on the preliminary results of this year's official census.

The Koichi No. 3 district, which has the smallest population, was used as the benchmark. It was followed by the Tokushima No. 3 district, the Kochi No. 2 and the Nagasaki No. 3.

The Chiba No. 4 district is the most populous, followed by the Hyogo No. 6, the Tokyo No. 6 and the Tokyo No. 19.

The population disparity between Kochi No. 3 and Chiba No. 4 came to 2.203.

Based on the calculations, a Lower House committee in charge of redistricting will determine whether immediate action is needed.

As for the House of Councilors, the disparity in the value of a vote in Tottori, the smallest Upper House district, and in Tokyo, the largest, stands at 5.178, the ministry said.
