A small fire broke out Wednesday night in a basement machinery room at the Hotel New Otani Tokyo in Chiyoda Ward, but no one was injured, fire officials said.

According to the officials, a hotel employee called the fire department at around 7:40 p.m. to report smoke coming from the basement floors. More than 30 fire engines were dispatched to the scene, they said.

The fire was apparently caused when water from a leaking pipe fell on a switchboard in the room, located in the second basement floor of the hotel's main building, and while at one point a burning odor permeated the lobby, there was no major damage, fire officials said.
