A 12-year-old Japanese-Italian girl was recently confirmed to have been killed in the devastating tsunami that struck countries around the Indian Ocean last December, bringing the number of Japanese who died in the disaster to 40, Foreign Ministry officials said Tuesday.

The girl, who had dual Japanese and Italian citizenship, was identified as Leadina Torelli by her Italian father, who survived the disaster, the officials said.

The girl was visiting Thailand with her parents, they said, adding the girl's Japanese mother had been earlier identified among the fatalities.

The confirmation brings the number of Japanese still unaccounted for to two -- one who went missing in Sri Lanka and the other in the vicinity of the Thai resort island of Phuket.
