Nissan Motor Co. said Friday it has developed a type of paint that automatically repairs light scratches made to the body of an automobile.

The clear paint, which Nissan says is the first of its kind, is made of highly elastic resin, which prevents scratches from affecting the inner layers of paint on a car's body, according to the automaker.

The paint, called Scratch Guard Coat, returns a scratched surface to its original state within one to seven days, depending on temperature and the depth of the scratch, it said.

The paint helps cars resist scratches caused by automatic car washes better than conventional paint, the automaker said, noting that scratches from such machines account for the majority of scratches to car surfaces.

Scratches caused by off-road driving and fingernails are among the types of damage that can be repaired by the clear paint, Nissan said.
