The cost of repairing hotels, condominium complexes and other structures built with false quake-resistance data has so far been tallied at over 14 billion yen, the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry said Wednesday.
That calculation is based on the assumption that 30 million yen will be needed to fix each of the 471 units in the 13 condominium buildings determined at risk of collapsing in a moderately strong earthquake, the ministry told the House of Representatives Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee.
Land minister Kazuo Kitagawa told the panel separately that local authorities would be asked to provide public apartments rent-free to residents of the affected condominiums and that it would consider helping with dismantling them.
