Thousands of residents were evacuated Sunday in Tokyo while authorities dug up an unexploded 250-kg bomb, believed to have been dropped by the United States during World War II, a local official said.

The bomb, about 36 cm in diameter and 120 cm long, was detected earlier this month in a residential area in Katsushika Ward by Self-Defense Forces investigators, Katsushika spokesman Takanori Kato said.

Some 3,900 residents were evacuated for 90 minutes, he said.
