Russian President Vladimir Putin paid a call Tuesday on Emperor Akihito at the Imperial Palace before wrapping up his three-day visit to Japan.
Putin last met the Emperor when he visited Japan in September 2000 together with his wife, Lyudmila Putin.
Empress Michiko was not present at their meeting, as initially planned, after Putin's wife canceled plans to accompany her husband.
During talks Monday, Putin and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi made no progress on the long-standing row over the Russian-held islands off Hokkaido but they vowed to cooperate on fighting terrorism and boosting economic, trade and security ties.
