The Tokyo High Court on Tuesday ruled against a group of residents in Niigata Prefecture seeking nullification of a 1977 government decision allowing a nuclear reactor be built there.

The high court, upholding a lower court decision, said there was nothing wrong with the procedures leading up to the government's approval of the plan to construct the No. 1 reactor at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, nor with the preceding safety review.

The 33 plaintiffs who live near the plant, which is situated between the city of Kashiwazaki and the village of Kariwa, intend to appeal to the Supreme Court.
