A large amount of previously unreleased material written by the late Yukio Mishima will be published in December as part of a 42-volume set of complete works, sources said Friday.

The material, to be published by Tokyo-based Shinchosha Co., includes five short stories Mishima wrote during his youth, 54 letters and 16 literary memos.

Critics said they expect the material will show how Mishima developed as a writer.

The earliest of the five stories is believed to have been written when Mishima was in his first year at junior high school.

The material was found by researchers and editors, who looked at his effects at the Mishima Yukio Museum in Yamanashi Prefecture. Some of the documents were donated by acquaintances, they said.
