Pro golfer Masashi "Jumbo" Ozaki has debts totaling 1.6 billion, yen his lawyer said Wednesday, a day after it was revealed that he has been granted court protection from creditors.
Ozaki, 58, a five-time Japan Open winner and former money rankings leader, filed for court-mandated rehabilitation under the fast-track Civil Rehabilitation Law on Oct. 12 and the Tokyo District Court granted the request on Oct. 18, according to the court.
Ozaki is unable to repay his debts, his lawyer said.
A fixed amount of the debt will be written off with a new repayment schedule formulated over several years, his lawyer said, adding Ozaki plans to participate in the Japanese men's tour in the meantime.
A former pro baseball player, Ozaki has won 94 golf tournaments in his career, including five Japan Open titles.
