The Supreme Court has rejected the final appeal of a former Waseda University student sentenced to 14 years in prison for three gang rape convictions, judicial sources said Wednesday.
The top court's No. 2 Petty Bench decided Tuesday to uphold the Tokyo High Court's ruling in June that sentenced Shinichiro Wada, to 14 years, the sources said.
The high court ruled Wada, 31, an organizer of a student event club called Super Free, conspired with other club members to rape drunk women in such locations as his house in Tokyo and a bar in the Roppongi district in three cases in 2001 and 2003.
Wada's lawyers had sought a more lenient punishment, asserting lower courts erroneously recognized he was a ringleader. But Justice Yuki Furuta who presided over the top court's bench rejected the call.
Prosecutors indicted 13 other people in the Super Free scandal. All were found guilty and given prison sentences, which have been finalized.
