A top fashion event comprising a fashion show, symposiums and networking for textile and fiber makers opened Monday for a 10-day run with government support, in an attempt to shore up the country's presence on the world fashion scene.

The event, "Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo," is the first ever public-private fashion initiative.

The event includes the Tokyo Collection fashion show, which showcases a total of 52 brands in two pavilions set up especially for the event in the outer gardens of Meiji Jingu Shrine in Shibuya Ward.

The Tokyo Collection, which has been staged 19 times, was previously held in several venues around Tokyo and lasted longer than fashion shows in other centers of haute couture such as Paris, New York and Milan.

The new event also aims to give a boost to promising designers and to introduce Japan's textiles and fibers to international buyers.

The event will provide matchmaking opportunities for textile makers, designers and the apparel industry.

"Asian Color Forum" to be held at a Tokyo hotel on the final day of the event, Nov. 9, will explore the latest color trends in Japan, South Korea and China.
