Japan on Monday expressed support for a new proposal by the European Union to push forward negotiations at the World Trade Organization, to make progress not only in the key agricultural sector but also in industrial and services trade areas.
"Japan agrees with the EU that negotiations must see progress in nonfarm and services sectors as well. In that way, Japan can support the EU offer," Vice Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hideji Sugiyama said at a regular news conference.
The EU presented its much-awaited proposal Friday for the WTO talks that calls for an average cut of 46 percent in agricultural tariffs, much steeper than the 24.5 percent average reduction in its previous offer.
But major players such as the U.S. have expressed disappointment, saying the offer is insufficient.
The regional body also sought cuts in tariffs on industrial products.
