A strong typhoon in the Pacific was moving northeast Tuesday and was expected is to come close to the southern part of the Izu Island chain early Wednesday, the Meteorological Agency said.

As of 8 p.m., Typhoon Kirogi, the season's 20th, was about 190 km south-southwest of Hachijojima and heading northeast at 20 kph.

The agency said the typhoon was likely to bring heavy rain, strong winds and waves of more than 6 meters in the island chain.

The agency warned about the possibility of strong winds and high waves in a wide coastal area on the Pacific stretching from the Kanto region to the Kinki region centering on Osaka.

The typhoon, with a barometric pressure of 955 hectopascals and winds up to 144 kph near its center, was expected to be within a 110-km radius of a point 40 km southeast of Hachijojima as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the agency said.
