A 13-year-old member of a junior high school baseball team in Kyoto Prefecture died last Sunday, a day after playing a game and later taking part in three hours of hard training, police said Friday.

The boy collapsed in a ballpark in the town of Kyotanabe around 8 p.m. Saturday after the 63-year-old team manager had the team practice throwing for an hour starting at 5 p.m., followed by 300 sprints.

The manager said he had the teenager, a second year junior high school student, and other team members do the exercises as punishment for losing a game earlier in the day.
