The head of the Israeli shipping company that owns the containership believed involved in last week's fatal collision with a Japanese fishing boat apologized Tuesday for the loss of life it caused.

The 41,507-ton Zim Asia collided with the 19-ton Shinsei Maru No. 3 about 40 km off Hokkaido, causing the Japanese vessel to capsize. Seven of the eight crew members were later found dead in the hull.

"I'm here to express my sincere condolences for the victims, and my apology to their families, and hope that the survivor will recover soon and (my apology) to the entire Japanese nation for this tragic accident," said Doron Goder, chief executive of Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd.
