Tokyo has given up on concluding talks with the United States over military realignment by the end of this year, citing expected delays stemming from the upcoming general election, according to government sources.
Washington has asked Tokyo to speed up base realignment negotiations following the Sept. 11 House of Representatives election.
The election and related events are expected to prevent the national government from beginning full-fledged talks with local governments hosting U.S. bases.
