Toyota Motor Corp.'s Corolla remained the best-selling vehicle in Japan in the first half of the year, with sales of 80,028 units, an industry body said Wednesday.

But not a single model from Mitsubishi Motors Corp. made the list of Japan's 30 best-selling cars in the January-June half as compiled by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

The association, which issues the list every month, said Corolla's good performance anchored the sedan's popularity among Japanese drivers for a third consecutive half, although the latest sales figures fell 15.3 percent from the same period a year ago.

Toyota's Vitz compact was in second place, followed the Fit compact by Honda Motor Co. in third.

Import sales fall 2.6%

Sales of imported vehicles in the first half dropped 2.6 percent from a year ago to 135,331, due to a sharp fall in sales of cars made abroad by Japanese automakers.

The Japan Automobile Importers Association said Wednesday that sales of foreign-brand imported vehicles increased 3.2 percent in the January-June period to 125,698 units, but those of imported Japanese vehicles plunged 44.1 percent to 9,633 units.
