Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Monday it will move its head office at the end of next year back to a building near JR Tamachi Station in Tokyo that it occupied until April 2003.
The return to the original building is aimed partly at cutting costs, because the leasing fee for the building is relatively low, said the automaker, which is struggling with sharp falls in sales as a result of a spate of defect coverups and vehicle recalls.
Mitsubishi Motors moved its head office to the current place, a building near Shinagawa Station, saying it was to take advantage of the various information technology functions at the new offices. Its lease on the building expires next year.
The company in May 2004 announced a reconstruction plan calling for greater sales and the relocation of its head office to Kyoto.
But it shelved the Kyoto plan for cost reasons, company officials said.
MMC said in a statement it has decided to re-examine the scale and timing of the relocation when its performance reaches a stage where the "prospects for achieving the Mitsubishi Motors revitalization plan" become certain.
