Amid low voter turnout Sunday, the Democratic Party of Japan replaced New Komeito as the No. 2 force in the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly in a closely watched election.
The Liberal Democratic Party retained its position as the largest force in the capital but was unable to hold on to its pre-election strength of 51 in the 127-seat assembly.
While all 23 candidates fielded by New Komeito won, the DPJ shot past its target of winning 30 seats and ended up well above its pre-election force of 19.
