Forged credit cards based on those issued in Japan accounted for 80 percent of the fraud cases here linked to the massive card information leak in the U.S., according to card companies' data compiled Friday.
The use of the card information for online shopping has been minimized possibly to avoid revealing the users' identity, while each purchase with a forged card is usually limited to less than 100,000, yen company officials said.
The Tokyo office of Visa International Inc. said it has so far found the illicit use of 838 Japanese credit cards issued jointly with Visa, including 658 cases considered to have involved counterfeit cards at retailers.
