Police took action against 2,965 people suspected of possessing illegal drugs during its May to June antidrug campaign, up a steep 19.1 percent from the year before, the National Police Agency said Thursday.
The number of people suspected of possessing stimulants rose to 2,524, up 25.3 percent from the same period last year, the NPA said.
The NPA said 120 minors were arrested or questioned on suspicion of possessing various drugs, up by 22 from a year before.
Of the 120, 82 were involved in stimulants, up 22, while four were suspected of possessing MDMA or Ecstasy, down 14 from a year ago.
The number of people suspected of possessing cannabis came to 304, down 40 from a year earlier, while 99 were suspected of possessing "narcotics or psychotropic drugs," down 23, the report says, without elaborating.
Police arrested or questioned 1,301 mobsters on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs, up 71.6 percent from a year before. The number of gangsters accused of possessing stimulants rose 68.5 percent to 1,191. The NPA said 78 gangsters were arrested or questioned on suspicion of possessing cannabis and 28 for other narcotics.
