A Japanese man who died in an attempt to save two drowning women while he was on a business trip in China in 1997 has finally been granted workers' compensation, his wife's lawyer said Saturday.

"His death should be considered work-related," the Labor Insurance Appeal Committee said in overturning two earlier administrative decisions not to grant compensation to man's wife.

The top administrative organ to rule on workers' compensation and employment insurance has rarely found a death resulting from a lifesaving action during work hours to be work-related.
