Crown Princess Masako may accompany Crown Prince Naruhito to attend the opening ceremony for the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games next month in Nagano Prefecture, Imperial Household Agency officials said Friday.
It would be the first official trip outside Tokyo for Princess Masako since November 2003, when she attended the opening ceremony for a national sports competition for disabled people held in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The 41-year-old princess has been mostly out of public view because she is suffering from an "adjustment disorder," a state of anxiety and depression that has been attributed to anything from the stress of her status, life at the palace and schedule to pressure to bear a male heir. The agency will finalize its decision after consulting doctors about her health, the officials said.
